Crochet around a ball

This is the simple instruction on how to crochet around a styrofoam ball.

If you are concerned with the crocheted piece being transparent, I talk a little bit about how to avoid this here:

There are three parts of this:

del 1
Crochet a flat circle

del 2
Crochet the sides

del 3
Crochet the flat circle backwards

The “pattern” is here:

Abbreviations
st: stitch(es)
ch: chain
sc: Single Crochet
sl st: slip stitch
j: join with slip stitch
2sc tog: 2 single crochet together
(insert the hook in the next st, yarn over, pull up a loop, insert the hook in the next st, yarn over, pull up a look (3 loops on hook) yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook)

Part 1: the flat circle

Start
ch 2

NotFound
Round 1
in the 2nd st from the hook, 6 sc, j

NotFound
Round 2
ch 1, (2 sc in each st) repeat 6 times, j

NotFound
Round 3
ch 1, 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in the next st) repeat 6 times, j

NotFound
Round 4
ch 1, 2 sc in next st, 2 sc in the next st) repeat 6 times, j

Repeat this third row, increasing the number of sts before the increase (the 2 sc in the same stitch) for each round.

Hold the piece up to the styrofoam ball. It is big enough, when it is as big as the diameter of the ball. Remember the largest number of sc you did before an increase, you will need this a little later.

part 2 – sides

NotFound
ch 1, 1 sc in each st, j

Repeat this round until the crocheted piece covers 2/3 of the ball.

part 3 – finishing

NotFound
Round 1
ch 1, (x sc in next st, 2sc tog) repeat 6 times, j

Here, replace x with the largest number on the increase rounds (the one you noted down earlier)

NotFound
ch 1, (x sc in next st, 2sc tog) repeat 6 times, j

Here, replace x with the number on the previous round – 1

this could look like this (THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE)
(4 sc, 2 sc tog)
(3 sc, 2 sc tog)
(2 sc, 2 sc tog)
(1 sc, 2 sc tog)
(2 sc tog)
Then, sow or crochet the remaining sts together.
